What is daytime care?

Daytime care is when a carer comes to your loved one's home for agreed hours during the day to help with everyday tasks and provide company. It suits people who need regular help to keep living at home, especially when family are not available, and it can add to any HSE home support hours already in place.

Our carers are trained healthcare assistants, not nurses, so daytime care is practical, non-clinical support and does not include nursing or medical tasks. United Irish Healthcare is a private, independent provider, not part of the HSE, and works alongside your GP, public health nurse and any HSE services you use.

How does daytime care work?

Tell us about your loved one's routine and needs, and we agree the days and hours of care with you. Care plans are tailored to the person and reviewed regularly, so they can change as needs change.

We match a Garda-vetted, experienced carer and can usually have them in place within a few days. Your loved one has a designated carer, with a familiar second carer for cover, so they see consistent faces.

UIH employs the carer and handles their pay, tax and training, so your family does not take on the responsibilities of an employer. There are no long-term contracts.

Two ways to arrange daytime care

Regular daytime visits

A carer calls to the home for a set number of hours to help with personal care, meals, medication prompts and company, as often as you need through the week.

Full-day support

Longer cover, for half a day or a full day, with steady company and personal care for someone who needs more support through the day.

What do our daytime carers help with?

Friendly, practical help at home through the day, for the hours you agree with us.

Personal care & dressing

Transportation

Meal preparation

Companionship

Medication prompts

Light housekeeping

What our carers do, and the three things they don’t

Day to day, our carers help with

  • Washing, dressing and personal care

  • Meals and drinks

  • Medication prompts and reminders

  • Getting about the home safely

  • Company and a settled daily routine

  • Getting to appointments

  • Light housework and laundry

  • A break for family carers

Our carers don’t give injections, dress wounds or administer insulin.

Those three stay with the GP or public health nurse.

For everything else, talk it through with your care manager.

They’ll tell you plainly what a carer can take on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How short or long can a visit be?

+

From a short call of a couple of hours to full-day support — we build the visits around what your loved one needs, as often through the week as suits.

Will it be the same carer?

+

Yes — we assign a designated carer, with a familiar second carer for cover, so your loved one sees consistent faces.

Can you help after a hospital stay?

+

Yes — we often start daytime visits in the first weeks at home after a discharge, and can usually be in place within a few days.

Is there a setup or placement fee?

+

Yes. A one-time placement fee covers the work of assigning your carer and setting up the placement. Your care manager includes it in your quote, and a replacement carer never costs extra.

Up to 40%

home-carer tax relief at your marginal rate

Relief is claimed on Form HK1 at your marginal rate. Always check your position with Revenue.
