A short conversation
Which days and hours would help, what has got harder at home, and anything we should know about your loved one.

Life at home with sight or hearing loss
Losing some sight or hearing changes the small, everyday parts of life at home. Reading the post, finding something that has been moved, hearing the doorbell or following a conversation can all take more effort than before. Getting to appointments, the shops or a neighbour's house can feel harder too, and some people start to go out less and feel cut off from family and friends.
Home care helps keep everyday life going. A trained healthcare assistant can read the post and letters aloud, keep the home laid out the way your loved one knows it, go with them to appointments and offer a steady arm when they are out. They take time to speak clearly and face to face, and write things down where that helps.
We assign a designated carer, with a familiar second carer for cover, so your loved one comes to know their voices and the way things are done.
How our carers help
Reading post and letters aloud
A steady arm when out and about
Clear, face-to-face communication
Going with them to appointments
Keeping the home laid out as they know it
Medication prompts
What we don't do
Our carers do not give injections, dress wounds or administer insulin. With medication, they give prompts and reminders. If your loved one has a catheter or other care needs, talk it through with your care manager, who is nurse-trained and will tell you honestly what we can take on. Sight tests, hearing tests and hearing aid settings stay with the optician and audiologist. Carers are not sign-language interpreters. We work alongside your GP, public health nurse and hospital team, who stay in charge of medical care.
Signs it may be time for more support
- Letters and post are piling up unopened
- Medication is being forgotten or missed
- Appointments are being missed, or getting there has become a struggle
- There's been a fall, a trip or a near miss at home
- They're going out less, or missing calls and visitors
- A family carer is running on empty

What families say
United Irish Healthcare have been beyond any of my expectations. UIH had us sorted in a matter of hours. I cannot thank Daniel, Olivia and Jean enough — highly recommend.
Doireann Kate Gough
We use UIH for night care for our Mam. The staff have been fantastic — it is very personal and she is comfortable with her carers.
Orla Daly
For the last 8 months Mum has had two very kind carers fulfilling her wish to stay in her own home. The peace of mind is well worth it.
