Living with a heart condition at home

A heart condition often means pacing the day. Jobs that used to be easy, like the stairs, carrying shopping or cooking a full dinner, can leave someone tired, and good days and bad days are common. There may be a new diet to follow, tablets to take at set times and regular appointments with the GP or hospital clinic. Worry is often part of it too, for the person and for the family.

Home care helps keep that routine steady. A trained healthcare assistant can cook meals that follow any diet the GP or hospital team has advised, give medication prompts at the right times, help with washing and dressing without rushing, and offer a steady arm around the house and when heading out. Because a designated carer gets to know your loved one, everyday changes, such as eating less or not seeming quite themselves, are more likely to be noticed and passed on to the family, as agreed when care is set up. Carers don't monitor the heart condition itself. That stays with the GP and hospital team.

What we don't do

Our carers do not give injections, dress wounds or administer insulin. With medication, they give prompts and reminders. If your loved one uses home oxygen or has a catheter, talk it through with your care manager, who is nurse-trained and will tell you honestly what we can take on. Heart monitoring, diagnosis and clinical decisions stay with your GP, public health nurse and hospital team, and we work alongside them.

Signs it may be time for more support

  • Cooking, washing or the stairs have become too much to manage alone
  • Meals or medication are being missed
  • There's been a fall, or a near miss
  • They're just home from hospital and need help settling back in
  • The family worries about them being on their own, especially at night
  • A family carer is running on empty

What families say

United Irish Healthcare have been beyond any of my expectations. UIH had us sorted in a matter of hours. I cannot thank Daniel, Olivia and Jean enough — highly recommend.

We use UIH for night care for our Mam. The staff have been fantastic — it is very personal and she is comfortable with her carers.

For the last 8 months Mum has had two very kind carers fulfilling her wish to stay in her own home. The peace of mind is well worth it.
