Constant

How live-in care works in Kildare

On the Grand Canal in north-west Kildare, villages like Robertstown and Allenwood are a fair drive from the commuter towns of the north-east. If your loved one is living by themselves in one of them, or in a farmhouse outside Rathangan or Castledermot, family driving over from Naas or Celbridge can only cover so much of the week.

A live-in carer settles into the spare room and shares your loved one's day. They help with washing and dressing in the morning and with getting safely to bed at night, and they are in the house at the hours no visit would reach. UIH assigns one primary carer, plus a second carer who covers time off and whom your loved one also comes to know.

That continuity counts for most when dementia is part of the picture. At Kildangan, near Monasterevin, the Alzheimer Society of Ireland runs a day care centre on Harristown Drive, and Older Voices Kildare has held a monthly dementia café at the Kildare Community Development Centre on Meadow Road in Kildare town. Days can change, so check with each one. A live-in carer keeps home life steady around outings like these, and your loved one sees one familiar person from first thing until lights out.

The practical details, from the carer's bedroom to meals and days off, are sorted out beforehand with your care manager.

Live-in care across Kildare

rectangle-512.png

Live-in placements are possible anywhere in Kildare. The arrangement can suit homes some way from where the rest of the family live, such as Coill Dubh and Kilmeage in the north-west, or the country around Moone, Ballitore and Narraghmore in the south. Homes in Naas, Newbridge and the bigger towns are covered in exactly the same way, and the start date is agreed around your family's plans.

Growing older at home in Kildare

Kildare has no coast, and most of it sits low. The open plain of the Curragh lies between Newbridge and Kildare town, and most of the bogland is in the north-west and south-west. The higher ground is on the eastern edge, in the Wicklow Mountains foothills, where Cupidstown Hill on the South Dublin border is as high as Kildare gets.

Census 2022 counted 247,774 people in Kildare, up from 222,504 in 2016. Of these, 29,720 were 65 or older. At 12.0% of residents, that is well under the State figure of 15.1%, so on paper Kildare is a young county. Its older population is growing fast. The county council's Age Friendly page put it at over 22,000 in 2016. In 2022, 11,520 people were 75 or older and 2,504 were 85 or older.

The north and east, from Naas and Sallins up to Celbridge, Leixlip and Maynooth, is Dublin commuter country, yet 17.0% of people in the Leixlip electoral division are 65 or over. The Maynooth and Kilcock divisions are at 8.9% and 8.7%. South of the Curragh is Athy, a market town where the Grand Canal meets the Barrow, with Castledermot further south. That can leave a family spread across the county, with the working generation on the M7 or M4 each morning and a loved one alone in a quieter town or a canal village like Robertstown.

Local support in Kildare alongside private care

Alongside private care, Kildare families can call on the following, though numbers and details can change.

  • TFI Local Link Kildare South Dublin operates from Áras Chill Dara in Naas, with door-to-door collection on rural routes. The Free Travel Pass covers every Local Link service (045 980 383).
  • Citizens Information has centres in Athy, Maynooth, Naas and Newbridge, and anyone can phone 0818 07 4000 for the national service.
  • Kildare County Council's Age Friendly Programme (045 980 538) works with the Kildare Older Persons Council, a volunteer group aged 55 and over. Every local authority, Kildare included, now has an Age Friendly Housing Technical Advisor for technical advice on age-friendly accommodation.
  • The Alzheimer Society of Ireland's Dementia Adviser for Kildare and West Wicklow offers free, confidential information and signposting. National Helpline 1800 341 341.
  • Gardaí in the Naas Garda District started a free Community Register, described in the council's 2022 older persons booklet, with calls or visits for people who live alone or have mobility issues.
  • Family Carers Ireland covers Kildare and West Wicklow from Citywest Business Campus, Dublin 24 (045 250084).

Setting up care after a hospital discharge in Kildare

Leaving Naas General Hospital for an empty house in Rathangan or Castledermot is a daunting prospect for someone living alone. A live-in carer means help with meals and medication prompts from the first days home, while strength returns. If the stay was across the Laois border at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, the same applies. Ring 0818 700 100 during the hospital stay and the carer's start can be planned around the discharge date.

Why families choose United Irish Healthcare

We employ, vet and insure every carer, and we arrange cover ourselves when your carer takes leave. Care usually starts within days, sometimes sooner, and your loved one has one primary carer with a familiar backup.

Why Kildare families choose us

In a canal village like Robertstown in north-west Kildare, a live-in carer is in the house at the hours no visit would reach, from the morning wash to getting safely to bed.

Where the family live in Naas or Maynooth and your loved one lives further out, a single primary carer moves in and hands over to a familiar backup at changeover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a setup or placement fee?

+

Yes. A one-time placement fee covers the work of assigning your carer and setting up the placement. Your care manager includes it in your quote, and a replacement carer never costs extra.

Can I decide which days and hours the carer works?

+

Yes, you can specify the days and hours in accordance with your package. The number of days is flexible; a 24/7 package means a carer is available every day of the week.

Will I have the same carer consistently?

+

Yes. You will have a designated primary carer, available except when on leave, on holiday, or unwell — when a reliable secondary carer familiar to the family and client steps in.

Does the carer have to live in the home full time?

+

No. Our carers have their own homes and may return to them when they are off duty.

Questions about live-in care in Kildare

Our loved one lives on their own near Robertstown. Is that too remote for live-in care?

It is not. UIH places live-in carers right across Kildare, rural townlands along the canal included. Beyond a room for the carer to sleep in, the details are worked through with your care manager before anything starts. UIH care usually begins within days, sometimes sooner.

Our loved one near Athy needs insulin. Can a live-in carer give it?

A UIH carer cannot give insulin, and the same goes for any injection or wound dressing. Medication support from the carer means prompts and reminders only. Ask your loved one's GP how insulin will be managed at home. Anything else you are unsure about in the carer's role is a question for your care manager.

Do you cover west Wicklow towns like Blessington and Dunlavin, which link with Kildare for health services?

Yes. Every one of the 26 counties is covered by UIH, Wicklow included. The HSE treats west County Wicklow as part of Kildare for health services, and GP practices in Blessington and Dunlavin are on KDOC's list of participating surgeries. Ring UIH on 0818 700 100 first, and the arrangements for your loved one's area are worked out from there.

Which hospitals do people in Kildare usually deal with?

Naas General Hospital on Craddockstown Road serves the county as its acute hospital. Its emergency department operates around the clock, and the hospital gives its catchment as over a quarter of a million people in Kildare and West Wicklow. Depending on where they live, people in Kildare may also attend Tallaght University Hospital, St James's Hospital or Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in Dublin. If it is life-threatening, dial 999 or 112 straight away.

Can my loved one have a personal alarm as well as home care in Kildare?

Yes, the two work well side by side. The Seniors Alert Scheme funds a free personal monitored alarm for over-65s of limited means, and you apply through a local community group registered with Pobal. The council's 2022 booklet listed Kildare groups including Athy and District Care of the Elderly, Celbridge Community Council and Naas & District Community Alert.
