Two ways to arrange live-in care
Flex
A carer lives in the home and provides your agreed active care hours through the day, plus the reassurance of a carer resting in the home overnight.
Constant
A small team of carers provides cover around the clock, so someone is awake and on hand day and night. It suits higher-dependency needs.

How live-in care works in Wexford
County Wexford was home to 11,770 people aged 75 or over in 2022, and 2,774 of them had passed 85. At those ages a fall or a spell of confusion can quickly mean someone is needed under the roof around the clock. A live-in carer, who is a trained healthcare assistant, moves into your loved one's home, sleeping in a spare room and fitting into the household's own rhythm.
It makes most sense where help would otherwise be a long drive off, such as a bungalow outside Kilmore Quay, a farmhouse under the Blackstairs near Bunclody or a cottage beyond Fethard-on-Sea. In homes like these, a few short calls a day still leave long, quiet hours in between.
One carer takes the lead, and a regular relief carer, familiar to your loved one, covers days off. Every carer is Garda-vetted, with UIH employing and insuring each one. Clinical decisions stay with the family doctor, the public health nursing service and any HSE team already calling, such as WEXICOP, the HSE's integrated care team for people aged 70 and over with frailty, falls, or cognitive or functional decline. UIH is independent of the HSE and works alongside them. Medication help goes no further than prompts and reminders, and insulin, injections and wound care stay with the clinical team.
Ahead of the start date, the room, meals and house routines are settled with your care manager, who stays in contact afterwards.
Live-in care across Wexford

Live-in carers go to homes all over County Wexford. That includes Kilmore Quay, Lady's Island and Tagoat in the far south, Fethard-on-Sea and Campile on the Hook side of the county, and Ferns and Bunclody towards the Wicklow and Carlow borders. Because the carer lives with your loved one, the distance from Wexford town makes little difference to the plan. Give the townland or Eircode when you first ring, and travel for changeover days can be planned around it.

Growing older at home in Wexford
County Wexford fills the south-east corner of Ireland, with the sea along two of its sides. St George's Channel and the Irish Sea wash the east coast, and the south coast curves from Rosslare past the lagoons at Lady's Island and Tacumshin to Kilmore Quay and the Hook Peninsula. The Barrow divides Wexford from Kilkenny, Mount Leinster rises in the Blackstairs on the Carlow border, and most of the land in between is low, fertile farmland crossed by the Slaney.
Census 2022 counted 163,919 residents. Wexford town had 21,524, Enniscorthy 12,310 and Gorey 11,517. New Ross had 8,610, a CSO figure that includes the part of the town on the Kilkenny side of the Barrow.
The same census found 27,403 people aged 65 or over, about one in six, up 25% since 2016. Age varies sharply by place. Kilmore Quay had 25.1% of its people at 65 or older, and Rosslare Strand 24.3%, yet Gorey, with an average age of 36.3, was the youngest of the large towns.
For care at home, the parish matters. A coastal village in the far south or a farm in the Blackstairs foothills can be a long way by road from Wexford town and its hospital, so travel time needs to be counted into every visit plan. Nearer the four main towns, shorter visits fitted around family routines are easier to set up.

Setting up care after a hospital discharge in Wexford
Some Wexford families face long stays outside the county at University Hospital Waterford, the designated cancer centre for the south east. A long admission there, or at Wexford General Hospital, can leave your loved one much weaker than before. Once the ward has a likely discharge date, ring us. A live-in carer can then be lined up for the return, with the room and routines talked through beforehand.
Why families choose United Irish Healthcare
We employ, vet and insure every carer, and we arrange cover ourselves when your carer takes leave. Care usually starts within days, sometimes sooner, and your loved one has one primary carer with a familiar backup.
Why Wexford families choose us
Where Mount Leinster rises on the Carlow border, a home outside Bunclody is a fair distance from Wexford General Hospital, and a live-in carer is on hand from morning to night.
University Hospital Waterford is the cancer centre for the south east, so some Wexford families face treatment outside the county, and a live-in carer lets home life carry on through those weeks.

What families say
United Irish Healthcare have been beyond any of my expectations. UIH had us sorted in a matter of hours. I cannot thank Daniel, Olivia and Jean enough — highly recommend.
Doireann Kate Gough
We use UIH for night care for our Mam. The staff have been fantastic — it is very personal and she is comfortable with her carers.
Orla Daly
For the last 8 months Mum has had two very kind carers fulfilling her wish to stay in her own home. The peace of mind is well worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a setup or placement fee?
+
Yes. A one-time placement fee covers the work of assigning your carer and setting up the placement. Your care manager includes it in your quote, and a replacement carer never costs extra.
Can I decide which days and hours the carer works?
+
Yes, you can specify the days and hours in accordance with your package. The number of days is flexible; a 24/7 package means a carer is available every day of the week.
Will I have the same carer consistently?
+
Yes. You will have a designated primary carer, available except when on leave, on holiday, or unwell — when a reliable secondary carer familiar to the family and client steps in.
Does the carer have to live in the home full time?
+
No. Our carers have their own homes and may return to them when they are off duty.
Questions about live-in care in Wexford
Does an old Wexford farmhouse suit a live-in carer?
Usually, yes. The carer will need a spare bedroom, and heating, the bathroom and any fall risks can be talked over with your care manager ahead of day one. If the house needs changes, the Healthy Age Friendly Homes coordinators at Wexford County Council can assess the home of anyone over 65 for free and connect them with adaptations and other supports.
How soon can live-in care start in Wexford, and is there tax relief?
Care usually starts within days, sometimes sooner, including for homes near Kilmore Quay or out on the Hook. UIH is private, and you deal with us directly, with no HSE assessment needed first. You can reclaim tax at your marginal rate, which can be up to 40%, on what you pay for private home care, claimed on Form HK1. Phone 0818 700 100 and ask us about it.
Which HSE region is County Wexford in?
HSE Dublin and South East covers all of County Wexford. This 2024 health region also takes in Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wicklow, Tipperary South and part of South Dublin, though some local services still carry the older South East Community Healthcare name. UIH is private and runs independently of the HSE, and we work alongside the family doctor and public health nurse who already see your loved one.
Do you cover the Hook Peninsula, Kilmore Quay and the quieter corners of Wexford?
Yes. All 26 counties are within UIH's reach, and in Wexford that includes Fethard-on-Sea, Kilmore Quay, the villages under the Blackstairs and the coast around Courtown. Where a house is a good way out from any town, travel and timing are sorted out in the first conversation. In those homes live-in care is sometimes easier to arrange than a string of short visits.
Where can my loved one be assessed for memory problems in Wexford?
The HSE's Wexford Memory Assessment and Support Service, known as WEXMASS, offers assessment, diagnosis and support to people developing memory or cognitive problems, and the GP can make the referral. The HSE also runs a Memory Technology Resource Room, an occupational therapy service that advises on equipment such as pendant alarms, phones and medication reminders. A UIH carer can keep things steady at home while those appointments go ahead.
Up to 40%
home-carer tax relief at your marginal rate
